We currently use Microsoft Office 2010

I've just downloaded the beta version of Office 2013 to play with (mainly to look at Power View for xl)

After the install in Windows explorer all the xl file icons have changed to the new version:

Image Showing .xlsx file Association Problem

I've tried the following two ways to make the default file type the old version of Excel but it does not seem to want to work:

  • Right-clicked an excel file in explorer > Open with... > Choose default program then browsed to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\ > then double clicked Excel.exe
  • Tried using the command line as instructed IN HERE

How do I force Windows Explorer to use Excel 2010?

Did you checked the checkbox located at bottom of Open With dialogue saying, "Always use Selected Program to open this kind of file" ? (had to ask..) – Lamb Sep 24 '12 at 12:13

There is a Easier way to handle file associations (defaultprogramseditor.com). No Install needed. – Lamb Sep 24 '12 at 12:18
@Lamb - I checked the box. Tried several times with the box checked. Even restarted my machine after doing this with the box checked. – whytheq Sep 24 '12 at 12:32
@Lamb .... seems like defaultprogrameditor has worked it's magic. I needed to change the start up program used by xlsx files and xlsm files using this application. Then I needed to follow the usual instructions i.e right-click and excel file etc. – whytheq Sep 24 '12 at 13:18
@Lamb ...BUT now every time I open an xlsx file from explorer it opens a whole new instance of excel. (this will teach me for not putting this trial version in a VM) – whytheq Sep 24 '12 at 16:47
