In Ubuntu you can easily look for apps and files by just writing it.

The search function on the Start menu on the other hand is really slow and not as versatile.

Is there an alternative?

The search is rather quick for me, I'm using defaults and an SSD. –  cloneman Oct 2 '12 at 23:07

By default the windows start menu search doesn't search through all your files and folder, but if there's any specific folders/drives you'd like it to search through all you need to do is add it in the Indexing Options menu, here you can also choose which filetypes should be indexed.

I personally use Launchy, but I don't know if that's exactly you're looking for. It's very handy and you should give it a try though!
