Place a check mark in the checkboxes next to the individual messages you wish to delete and click on the delete button.

You can also select a range of messages by selecting the first message and then shift-clicking the last one you want to delete. – Jack M. Oct 2 at 14:53

As mentioned, check the messages you wish to delete, then press the Delete button.

However, don't forget that # is the keyboard shortcut for "delete."

Keyboard workflow can be pretty speedy and less tedious than using mouse to check those little boxes. For instance, if there are several items you wish to delete, just use J and K to move through the list of messages, X to set the checkmark next to a message, then # to delete the messages you checked.

# also works from within a message (delete this message).

See more keyboard shortcuts by pressing ? from within Gmail.

(EDIT: As noted, you must enable keyboard shortcuts for your account. Go to Settings, then it's under the General section.)

Agreed -- but note that you need to enable keyboard shortcuts in your settings. – Doug Harris Oct 2 at 3:11
Good point--not having them enabled almost never occurs to me. :) Added a note to this effect. – bill weaver Oct 2 at 13:52
I'm with you on that. On the rare occasions that I'm using somebody else's gmail I get momentarily confused when I'm typing things and nothing happens. – Doug Harris Oct 2 at 21:56

Use checkboxes and check the messages to delte. SHIFT-click to select several at once. Or use the select options at the top that says "Select: All, None, Read, Unread, Starred, Unstarred".
