I've been asked by a school teacher friend if I know of a really simple piece of software to record video from a web cam.

It is for use in a school so the kids can make their own simple videos. All the software I can find has far too many options.

We just need a big red record button and then to be able to save the file as something that can be opened by other video software.

All the software I've found so far is surprisingly complicated and not fit for this purpose.

If your webcam uses the standard Windows/Direct X compatible driver, you can display the webcam through AMCap which comes free as part of the Direct X SDK.

In a previous answer, I directly linked to AMCap, but, it was taken down, so, I am guessing Microsoft don't like giving the file out separately despite it being free.

Based on this and the fact that the Direct SDK is quite big, there is probably a better answer... just throwing this out there as a working one should nothing else be suggested.

(and if nothing else is suggested, as the Direct X SDK is free, I may just recompile it and give out my version of AMCap!)

I've found Camtasia to be very easy to use. You get a nice big red button and then a good editing studio to make changes with after. It's not cheap (approx US$ 300) but it is good.
