When I launch an application in Windows 7 it shows up in the tray, but no where on my main screen. When I hover over it and select the application, nothing shows up. In order to make the application visible, I need to hover over it, right click and select maximize.

Any time I maximize the screen and then select to make it a smaller window, it also disappears.

This is an awfully painful process in just trying to launch the application. Please help me figure out how to change this to make sure the application always opens into a maximized screen.

Mind sharing the name of the app? –  Karan Oct 23 '12 at 20:38

The reason is probably that the un-maximised window has been moved off screen. This can happen for a number of reasons such as a badly written app being moved to an external monitor and then the monitor being disconnected - though there are several other possibilities.

To get it back, try:

  1. Make sure the app is currently selected
  2. Press alt-space
  3. Choose Move from the menu that should appear disconneted from the app on your screen or press the m key
  4. You should now have a 4-way arrow cursor showing
  5. Use the cursor keys until you see the window appear
  6. When the window is visible, press return

Close and restart the app, it should now appear in the right place.

You can try right clicking the shortcut of the application in Start menu or on Desktop, select Properties and on Shortcut tab under Run select Maximized

Once the window is maximized (or resized the way you want), try pressing Ctrl + left mouse click to close that window.

The next time you open that application, the window should open in the size you wanted.
