For a free desktop app, try GnuCash.

+1 for Gnucash. Not sure if there is a Windows Mobile Client, though – Abhinav Jul 16 '09 at 7:55

After having a nightmare setting GnuCash up on Mac OS, I've started using (and quite like) MoneyDance. It's java so will run anywhere, and whilst it doesn't look amazing, it does seem snappier than you'd expect Java to be.

It is not free, but $40 isn't too expensive.

Apparently it's got all downloady from your bank stuff in it, but none of that (in any money software) works in the UK...

I've just figured out how to make it portable too, which is really nice.

Check this great software called YNAB. The interface is very beautiful and functional. However, it's not free.
