I have a wireless mouse for my desktop and cannot select items when left clicking. It is inconsistent; stop and go. Sometimes I have to right click first and then left click to activate the selection. This had never happened before. It started about 5 weeks ago. This is for my desktop with XP Op system. Please advise. Thx

Have you replaced the batteries, or tried moving the receiver closer? – Cole Nov 3 '12 at 0:27
Sounds like the mouse is broken, I would replace it, this happens with hardware. – Ramhound Nov 3 '12 at 1:31

First of all, try another mouse. If the problem keeps showing up, something is seriously wrong with your computer. Also try your mouse on another computer. The problem should occur there, too.

Now, here's my guess:

There might be a hair in the mouse. Try blowing it out with a spray-can of air. That stuff is called Compressed Air Spray and looks like a deodorant or WD40.

  • Images of a compressed air can.
  • Here's a German website that explains what I mean.
  • This video shows how to use that stuff on a keyboard for a few seconds.

I'd point it at the slit between the mouse buttons and the rest of the chassis and gentry blow it. Try to hold the mouse and rotate it rather than the can. Keep the can upright. The stuff sometimes leaks out as a liquid if you hold it at too high an angle.

If that doesn't help, check if you still have warranty (if applicable in your country). If not, you might have to get a new mouse.
