Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm using 14" screen laptop with 1366*768 resolution. When I surf most news websites, they have approx. 2 inches margins on left- and right-hand side. Instead, main text column is too narrow. What is the reason for such web page design? I think it's waste of space and inefficient. For mobile readers, there is separate mobile page. There are many tablet users, but I think desktop or laptop is still dominant. Is there anything I didn't catch?

The designers of the page are trying to take into account those with narrower screens without doing the extra work involved with creating one that adjusts itself to the width and/or the pages contents just don't fit a screen that wide. It can be done but the investment in time and money to do so can be considerable in a lot of cases.
