I have a hard time finding desktop / consumer motherboards that support SATA / HDD Passwords or specifically the ATA security extension.

Does anyone know why this is and also, do you know of any motherboards except for the high-end ones from Intel that does support it?

This is likely because its an extension of the ATA standard. –  Ramhound Nov 7 '12 at 18:43
