Super User is a question and answer site for computer enthusiasts and power users. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I have an ACER TRAVELMATE 4002WLMi, with 512Ram , 1.6Gz, ATI radeon 9700/64Mb. I have windows xp but it's killing me since it's always crashing when I am using only....FIREFOX! I've tried: -Slitaz (Problem with Wi-fi is discouranging) -Porteus -Bodhi 2 -Lubuntu 10.10 -Slacko Puppy -Xubuntu 10.04

How can I optimize the machine I have? What should I do?

Thank you!

Welcome to Super User! In Super User, and all the StackExchange sites, shopping or product recommendations are considered off topic and open ended, and sometimes even too localized. Try to reword your question in a way that you are not asking for products, but more of processes; this will help keep it on topic – Luke Nov 7 '12 at 20:41

XFCE is fairly light, though if you're really concerned about it, Mint + Fluxbox is a very lightweight partnership which does offer a lot of flexibility (at the cost of some simplicity).

Most of the lightweight distros like that are debian-based like Ubuntu is, so you should be in familiar territory apt-getting whatever you need, gimp, firefox and the like.
