Update

I've gotten plenty of feedback on the software solutions and the unanimous solution for having a handheld device to record video seems to be to use a mobile phone (I was hoping there'd be some webcam-like device with wifi support...)

I'd appreciate more hardware suggestions now. That is, what mobile phones have good video recording quality (and battery time)?

I'm looking for a solution to broadcast video live on the internet from a location (an apartment), with a device that can be carried around.

What options are there? I'm looking for complete solutions (i.e., what hardware to use, what software to use, how it should all be set up.)

Currently, I have my mobile phone (Nokia N95 8GB) with Qik installed connected to wifi, but unfortunately the videos get bad quality (especially since it's indoors with poor lighting) plus the battery gets used up quickly.

Do you mean on the internet or just on the local network of your apartment? – bAN Oct 8 '09 at 10:25
The video should be accessible on an internet address... But if I can just get it onto the local network there won't be any problem publishing it, so any way works for me. – Blixt Oct 8 '09 at 11:41

There are several ways to do this:

  1. http://flixwagon.com/ Live video streaming from your cell phone
  2. http://www.ustream.tv/mobile Live video streaming from your phone
  3. http://qik.com/info/product%5Fhighlight Live video streaming from your phone Robert Scoble loves Qik
  4. http://www.kyte.com/solutions/pg/tv%5Ffilm Live video streaming (I find the site quite confusing)

Best wishes! It can be done!!

Bambuser can probably do what you're looking for, if you want to use a mobile (yours, or any other which is listed in this page) for directly streaming to the internet.

More information here:

How much does this cost?

Our base service is free to consumers and non profit organisations.

When broadcasting over the GSM network, your operator might charge you for costs associated with data transfer. We recommend you to get a flat rate contract with your operator. Our broadcasting application also support Wi-Fi based access, which might be a great alternative to the GSM network in some cases, if your phone has Wi-Fi support.

Can I do Private broadcasts?

Oh yes you can.

Nice, I'll bookmark that one! But I'm also looking for an update in hardware... either a new mobile phone with better camera than N95, or some other kind of device. Suggestions? – Blixt Oct 8 '09 at 12:47

Since I see in your profile that you're in Sweden, have a look at the Umoe Live solution... :)

That's basically just a pre-packaged setup with a laptop, camera, etc. I'm looking for the stuff I need to make my own package for a wifi solution (with a device that's easy to carry around.) – Blixt Oct 8 '09 at 10:06

This is what i use : Archos + WMediaPlayer's Media server

I just have to start my desktop computer with all my media files and connect my Archos player to my wifi network and search media servers, he found the desktop's WMP and i access to all my files..

Battery is 4 hours long approximately, but it's just a local network i'm not on the internet. It's work in the wifi range (so: garden, bathroom, bedroom..).

I'm not looking to view video files wirelessly, I'm looking to record video and stream it onto the internet directly, as it is being recorded. – Blixt Oct 8 '09 at 11:29

I'm using G1 and you can do it very easy by using combo of g1 and YouTube (preinstalled on your Android phone).

Setup is friggin easy: you need:

  • Google Account
  • YouTube Account associated with GA.

Hope this'll help.

I doubt that is a live stream solution though... With my current solution, if I record a movie that will be 5 hours long, it will be viewable the second I start recording, not after those 5 hours + the time it takes to upload. – Blixt Oct 8 '09 at 11:28

You can use a jailbroken iPhone with ustream or Qik, I jailbroke my old 3g and used ustream to do a bit of streaming and the quality was great and the jailbroken app had all the features that the web version of ustream has.

Cost: $100 USD for 3g and a 2 year contact with atnt

Battery: not very good but it lasts at least 4-5 hours

Quality: Very good audio+video

Newest Jailbreak software (as of today for all 3 models via quickpwn): http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/10/jailbreak-and-unlock-iphone-3-1-2.html
