I am currently using OpenOffice.org suite (OO.o) and would like to know its hidden features and advantages. (Please don't compare it with commercial products.)

One of the best features I know of is the built-in PDF and Flash export.

Please mention one feature per post.

Just for those who don't know why the built-in Export to PDF option is excellent: it creates clickable tables of contents, cross-references, indexes, and retains explicit internet links. Of course, when using some "Print to PDF" thing then most PDF viewers will recognise some URLs and email addresses when the www, http or @ are visible in the text. But when linking some words to a URL then most PDF printers do not convert that into a clickable link. (Simply because the print processor does not "tell" the PDF printer about this.) OpenOffice.org's Export to PDF retains all those links. – Arjan Oct 6 '09 at 10:43
This question is about features and advantages. I'm not exactly sure easter eggs count as any of the 2. – alex Oct 6 '09 at 11:29
Sorry its a mistake from my my-side :-( – joe Oct 6 '09 at 11:38
Allright, we're almost back at OpenOffice.org / OOo / the OpenOffice.org suite... :-) – Arjan Oct 6 '09 at 14:25

Instead of inserting tables from via Insert > Table function, you can insert tables by typing a simple syntax. Try this:

+--+--+--+

Type this syntax and press Enter; the line will automatically get converted into a table. The + character will get converted into vertical borders:

enter image description here

In case the table is not activated, go to Tools > AutoCorrect > Options and check the Create table. Also check the Format > AutoFormat > While Typing is enabled.

The fact that it's free and multi-platform seems to be the best advantage, in my opinion.

And, in reality, the only advantage. How does that saying go? "You get what you pay for"…? – joshhunt Oct 6 '09 at 10:47

True, you really do get what you paid for... That's why I still use Office most of the time. – alex Oct 6 '09 at 10:52

Open up OO Calc, click on any cell, type =GAME(”StarWars”) and press Enter.

You can now play StarWars game inside OpenOffice.

Note that this is not present in LibreOffice - you'll actually have to get OpenOffice to play this. – new123456 Jun 27 '11 at 15:44

OOo Writer lets you choose how to align the last sentence of justified text. Left, center or justified as well:
