Strange happenings , Upon bootup hovering over start menu items opens the app, if clicking once on an app it repeatedly opens the item until the system hangs, double clicking on a destop icon does the same. However if I do ALT F4 before any applications open then everything comes back to normal. Any thoughts...

please show us your msconfig for applications at startup; also check if your mouse button is not simply stuck –  Lorenzo Von Matterhorn Jan 13 '13 at 20:19

One of my first issues that CTL + ALT + DEL did not activate the task manager but I directed all my attention at the mouse and its drivers. and this was driving me nuts. As a last gap I replaced my keyboard and vouila everything is rosy again. Perhaps the ALT F$ was reversing a problem cause by a sticky or bad key. Regardless myy problem has been fixed and I appreciate your quick feedback. –  user187693 Jan 14 '13 at 4:18
