I realize that questions similar to this one have been asked before but I have not yet found a good solution for my particular problem.

I am looking for a software that allows me to organize results from experiments. I would like to link to (image) files in the text, with preview function. I would also like to have literature integration. I want to organize it in journal mode, something like:

" 2013-01-10

We did this particular experiment. The results shown in picture [preview of image, open full size when clicked on] are very similar to the work by Alumni et al [link to PDF]. We should do this and that [link to todo list] to further test our model."

In addition, I would like to document how I installed software, carried out specific software tasks, etc. From the technical point of view, this should be very similar to the above, e.g.

" 2013-01-11

Installed this software [link to download page]. Installation instructions were found here [link to saved web page]. "

Furthermore, I would like to build a knowledge database for frequently carried out tasks, such as stock solutions, etc. For this, a template function would be great.

And finally, the software should be a suitable for multiple users. Free is always good, but I am willing to pay for a good solution!

I have already tested some wikis (TiddlyWiki, MoinMoin), but they did not have the functionality I was looking for.

Thanks for your input!

Could you mention some solutions that you have tried so far? – Martín Canaval Jan 20 '13 at 10:57
@Martin: I tried TiddlyWiki. Very nice for taking notes, but does not allow e.g. literature referencing or pictures preview. Same with MoinMoin. pnuts: Word is no good when I want to build the knowledge database. I like the Wiki approach for this, but so far have not found a wiki which does all that I want. – tartrat Jan 20 '13 at 12:28
