Some hardware RAID controllers will emit audible beeps via a buzzer on the card when there is a disk failure. (For instance, some Adaptec ASR models emit a single beep, and if memory serves some Dell PERC models can beep persistently until the issue is acknowledged.)
I have an HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server, which has an integrated Smart Array P400i RAID controller. I've tried pulling SAS cables while the system is running (to simulate a disk failure) and it doesn't make a peep.
The manual is pretty basic and so far I haven't found any setting for this. Are these controllers just not able to beep on failures or is there a setting/jumper/option buried somewhere which I've missed?
(And yes I do know about remote monitoring such as SNMP etc. but like the KISS-ness of a good ol' buzzer.)
