I need to install the FFTW library on Mac OX X 10.8.

If I execute

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/

in Bash, I get

checking how to get verbose linking output from /usr/local/scisoft//packages/iraf/iraf/unix/hlib//f77.sh... configure: WARNING: compilation failed
checking for Fortran 77 libraries of /usr/local/scisoft//packages/iraf/iraf/unix/hlib//f77.sh... -L/usr/local/scisoft/lib/' -L/usr/local/scisoft/lib/ -lm
checking for dummy main to link with Fortran 77 libraries... none
checking for Fortran 77 name-mangling scheme... configure: error: in `/Users/FiorellaCagnetta/ZEST+/Libraries/fftw-3.3.3':
configure: error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program
See `config.log' for more details

Could you help me?

Do you have any fortran compiler installed (gfortran...)? I mean:

error: cannot compile a simple Fortran program

is kinda clear.

Plus, it is said there: http://www.fftw.org/install/mac.html that Fink have fftw3 available (http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/fftw3)

So what do you suggest to do? try to install a fortran compiler? –  user196003 Feb 6 '13 at 13:59
If you have no fortran compiler, you might, as well have no C compiler, missing libraries, missing headers. All of them are needed to build FFTW. Try Fink first: you won't need the compiler with it. All will be ready as soon as it is installed. I know FFTW is usually needed for intensive calculations, but you won't do it on your Mac if this is the case. And the precompiled FFTW found on Fink should be pretty much optimized already. –  Gael Feb 6 '13 at 14:06
--enable-fortran is needed to create libs usable by fortran programs. Do as you wish. 14MB is heavy?! Gosh! Whatever you are planning to do, you're gonna need much more than that. No, you don't just need FFTW, trust me. You'll need libraries, headers and compilers. From what I have seen, you've even got no compiler... Fink can install the gcc suite of compilers. Actually, Fink can install a lot of good stuff that you don't want to search, download and compile yourself. –  Gael Feb 6 '13 at 14:45

I had the same problem. This will fix it - Install gfortran first. I used

brew install gfortran

Then, pass the F77=gfortran parameter to the fftw .configure
