# Use MS Web Deploy and PowerShell to generate Web Deploy package from directory

I have an ASP.NET/MVC 4 web application built by MSBuild and output to a particular folder. On a previous project, we used the Microsoft Web Deploy executable to generate a package file based on content like this. I am trying out MS Web Deploy 3.0, and since our build scripts are written in PowerShell, I would like to use the PowerShell bindings to generate the package instead of calling the executable directly. How does I do this with Web Deploy 3.0?

I tried Backup-WDApp since it seemed the most appropriate. (It's supposed to generate a package file.) My command looks like this:

backup-wdapp -application 'C:\absolute\path\to\webapp\folder'

However, that command gives me the following error:

Backup-WDApp : The file 'web_deploy_generated_file_path.zip' could not be created.
The path '' is not valid.
