Most students at my alma-mater were stuck with using the regular old email system (which also booted you off after a certain period of no longer being enrolled), but as a former employee of the university I was able to get moved onto their Exchange mail (which also has seemingly prevented me from ever losing my account).

Over the 4 or so years I have almost completely fallen in love with it (especially the push email to my iPhone ability), but I am getting a little tired of having my primary email address being my old university email.

I also use GMail and integrate that with the Exchange account, but what I am looking for is a free or cheap way of getting my own personal Exchange account (or potentially multiple) with an email address of my choosing (myaddress.com).

Are there any providers that I should be focusing my attention on?

I think the only way would be to buy a copy of exchange server and get it up and running. – scheibk Jul 16 '09 at 13:56
@scheibk That doesn't sound very cheap. – tjrobinson Jul 16 '09 at 14:04
It doesn't, but I did find some alternatives. Unfortunately the costs aren't displayed on the sites. – scheibk Jul 16 '09 at 14:06

Congratulations, you were the recipient of me testing the bounty system. You were the original check mark recipient, but I took it away to place the bounty, and then gave the check back, so you walked away with some extra rep today. – TheTXI Sep 4 '09 at 16:39

If you want to setup your own solution, I've found these for linux. They claim to be exchange server alternatives.

I hope this helps. They each seem to offer hosted solutions, but I'm not sure how much they cost.

I've setup a Zimbra server to replace my Exchange server at work. It has 95% of the functionality and costs $18/mailbox/year for the professional edition. Otherwise it's free and can still do much of what Exchange can do. It's easy to setup and works like a charm!

Don't forget that you can use IMAP to replicate 90% of exchange functionality.

I use hMailServer and it's been fantastic. Syncing my phone with my laptop and my desktop is a pleasure now, and replicates the most important part of exchange (for me, anyways).

Gmail also supports IMAP.

Both solutions are 100% free.

Live.com now has ActiveSync (Exchange Push) support for their free e-mail accounts. If you already have a hotmail account and would like to use it or create a new one with Live.com (like I did; more availability), it's a great way to have a hosted Exchange mailbox with a good feature set and no expiration.
