I'm a student and over the years I've come upon free or special oppurtinities to students and fresh graduates to attend IT-related conventions for free, participate in programming contests or work on opensource projects for money.

There are things like Google Summer of Code or conventions that allow students to volunteer and attend for free, and internships you could apply for as a student, even career.stackoverflow.com allows students to publish their CV for a year for free. I often miss stuff like that simply because I didn't know about them.

Is there a place where I could find a list of computer/programming related activities and oppurtinities like that? Do you know of any such oppurtunity and care to post it in answer?

I'm not sure if this belongs here, but I'll leave that judgement to you (I thought about stackoverflow but it's not really programming related). As a student with little real world experience and as someone really interested in computers and IT in general, I really values these activities and wish I knew about more of them, before it's too late anyway!

Microsoft's Dreamspark program gives you a lot of free software. Among them:

  • Visual Studio 2008 Professional
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (based off Win 7 codebase)
  • SQL Server 2008 Developer

and previous versions.

Also, Google's I/O conference - $400 for professionals - is only $50 for students. That was a real steal this year, as they gave away $600 Android phones for free to all attendees. You pick any sessions you want to listen to. Free breakfast, lunch, all you can eat candy, etc.

I went the 1st year, stayed in a $26 hostel, walked to Moscone (that's where the conference was), took BART everywhere else. Loved it.

Apple's Developer Connection has a cheap(er) Developer program from Students.

Dreamspark's a great find, and lots of useful things are available there.

I've found lots of software vendors will offer a student discount if you email them and ask nicely. (Or ask if they have one at all.)

But, no I haven't seen a list yet.
