There is a remote network that I'm connecting to over the Internet via VPN (PPTP). The link is limited to 4 Mbit/s. When I connect to the network in Windows, I can download files over ftp at maximum link speed (4 Mbit/s). However, when connecting to the same network in Linux I only download at 1.5 Mbit/s. I'm running Debian 64-bit with the "pptp-linux" package installed.

Is there any setting I'm not aware of to manually adjust the speed?

Here's what I've tried:

  • (Linux) Download a file from ftp archive on the Internet (not over vpn): 100 Mbit/s
  • (Linux) Upload a file to ftp archive on the Internet (not over vpn): 100 Mbit/s
  • (Linux) Download a file from ftp archive at the remote network (over vpn): 1.5 Mbit/s
  • (Linux) Upload a file to ftp archive at the remote network (over vpn): 1.5 Mbit/s
  • (Windows) Download a file from ftp archive at remote network (over vpn): 4.0 Mbit/s
  • (Windows) Upload a file to fto archive at remote network (over vpn): 4.0 Mbit/s

I've also tried with the "speed" parameter when starting the connection but to no avail. However, I may be doing something wrong.

Since the files are pretty large (close to six gigabytes), it does make a huge difference.

Anyone got any ideas? Let me know if you need more info.
