I have an Inspiron 1420 which I had reverted from vVista back to good old XP Pro.
I have literally been searching for an answer to this problem for the past (at least) 2 weeks. I can't play any audio or video on my laptop without getting a static type sound and both are also very glitchy and choppy.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers and all of that. I changed back to sp2 and tried a few things regarding that as well. I am definitely at my wits end and I am really hoping someone can help me.

What are you playing the audio/video through? Windows Media Player? Does it occur with audio only? Does the same error persists using Winamp or similar? More detail is needed – Dave Mar 6 '13 at 12:26

Suggest going into Device Manager and deleting ALL audio and video entries. They will ALL auto-repopulate. I've fixed very squirly problems when the system clears out what amounts to corrupted devices. – Lizz Mar 9 '13 at 5:57
