I recently built a pretty decent window 7 dekstop, and have run into a problem with the sound drivers. they have been working fine up until a few days ago, when all of a sudden, the "Xonar DX Audio Center" stopped receiving sound from my system. when I right click on sound, and go to "playback devices" I usually set "S/PDIF Pass-through device" to run audio through the sound card. there are other options:

I have a USB headset (which can play audio no problem), and my monitor has speakers (my video card runs to my monitor using HDMI) and outputs sound just fine.

Interestingly enough, when I use the audio center application to test the speakers, they provide a "Left front" and "right front" test clip out through the sound card, but when I test "S/PDIF Pass-through device" from the "playback devices" window it shows the green sound bar moving, but no sound comes out of the ports on the card.

there is some gap in communication somewhere and i'm not sure how to fix it.

have you tried to restore your system? Restore it to "few days ago" when your sound was working. – malakrsnaslava Mar 14 at 0:16
