As a programmer I think there is a need to use mind mapping

Well, I think that "best" software is subjective, so probably the best thing to do is to compare the options to see what works best for you:

FWIW, I personally have used Freemind in the past. It's both free and open-source!

Mindjet MindManager. On Windows it tries to look like the Microsoft Office mindmapping software. There is also a Mac version.

Yes, I also love MindManager. It's too bad it's ridiculously expensive and rather bloated and slow, but I haven't found any other program that comes close to MindManager's easy-of-use and flow. – onnodb Oct 17 '09 at 15:11

Concept Draw MindMap one of the best mindmapping software I've seen

The Brain Storming mode is one of the most useful features, you should give it a look its one of the most structured yet very flexible software.

Downside its a paid for software, before this i used to use VUE

As I'm in a school the teacher use plain old MS Publisher. Planety of arrows, connectors and pointers, most Office Packages already have it installed and a large number of people in your company may already know how to use it.

I like SmartDraw. It's works really nicely and can do all sorts of other visual diagrams such as UML diagrams, floor plans, engineering diagrams and a lot more.
