I have this PC at work. Win-XP Professional Version 2002 with SP3 on a Dell Optiplex 790. It has Intel i7 quadcore, 3.3 GHz. 3GB RAM. Hard disk is a IDE ATA based disk. Only extra device I have is a USB ethernet adapter to get me two network interfaces which i need. This usb ethernet adapter works fine and behaviour of my PC is same even when it is removed.
The PC just hangs on some applications like Outlook, Perforce Visual client, Or Visual Studio 2008 Express, even under not heavy CPU/memory load i.e. when these are the only applications running. When these apps hang, all others apps get dead slow/cannot open any new application. Neither Task manager is able to kill them, nor a normal shutdown is possible. I have to hard reboot. It happens almost every day 2 times min. or sometimes it goes on without any such incident for 2-3 days continuously.
I did a BIOS test(Intel Bios, not sure of version) which involved a 'thorough test' to test memory, hard-disk , peripherals. The test ran all fine and did not report any errors in RAM or other such peripheral.
What could be wrong, motherboard, some peripherals, PCI bus or other such bus whose problem was not detected in Bios test.
I am looking for pointers to troubleshoot this problem which is causing great hindrance.
Any external S/W tool which might help diagnose the problem and then possible solutions to fix it.(Re-installing the Os, at the moment is not a viable solution due to work pressure as it would mean all set of tools I use at work, would need to be re-installed)
Please, any help would be appreciated.
