I try to learn to work with tomcat but are struggeling with the installation and starting of the daemon.

I downloaded from the tomcat website and put the binaries under /usr/local/apache-tomcat-7.0.37/

$CATALINA_HOME is pointing to this.

I configured the jsvc with the option -with-java=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64

and copied jsvc over to the bin/ directory.

After initializing the daemon like described in the documentation I tried to start the daemon:

sudo $CATALINA_HOME/bin/daemons.sh start
Cannot find any VM in Java Home /usr

The catalina.out says:

Cannot find any VM in Java Home /usr
Cannot locate JVM library file
Service exit with a return value of 1

I don't know what I have missed or why it is cutting the JAVA_HOME..

echo $JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64

Anyhow, without using the daemons.sh I seem to have tomcat working. At least I am able to access the successfull welcome page on http://localhost:8080/

Maybe the daemons script doesn't work with my configuration !? Any advice on how to properly check if my Tomcat installation works correct?

Could you show the contents of $CATALINA_HOME/bin/daemons.sh ? –  suspectus Mar 25 '13 at 13:56

I just ran into similar issues myself, so to save others time. You may find the Tomcat Unix daemon documentation helpful on this topic, specifically the last few paragraphs. I believe you'll need to try something like:

$CATALINA_HOME/bin/daemon.sh --java-home /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.../

As well you may need to copy the jsvc jar into $CATALINA_HOME/bin/commons-daemon.jar

If you don't specifically need to run tomcat as a daemon, invoking $CATALINA_HOME/bin/catalina.sh run is simpler.
