I want to install both a server and a desktop OS on the same machine. I want to install xen hyper-visor and on top of that a windows OS and a Linux server. The idea is to run the server all the time even when the windows machine is used. From what I read I can use IOMMU to pass the vga and other hardware "directly" to the windows environment. I am not clear if VT-d is equivalent to IOMMU and if my MB supports it.
I have 16GB DDR3 and pending acquisition of i7 3770 or 2600 (non K). I want to know what the performance hit would be on the windows environment when running let's say games (I am well aware that the server performance would drop but it will respond).
Would a SSD drive help? Is the idea even worth the trouble. Gaming usage would be casual, mostly browsing, compilation, and a little rendering.
