Use the lirc package and a usb adapter such as this one

Note I have never used that hardware and cannot attest to it's abilities, it is used as an example of the class of hardware one should purchase.

LIRC seems to be incompatible with Harmony 700. Can someone confirm this? –  anustart Apr 2 '13 at 16:09
