Would that laptop be able to handle running Windows 7? If so, is it even recommended? Any downsides?

It's an old laptop so I was skeptical about doing this.

Here are some more specs:

  • Intel Pentium M Processor 740
  • Intel integrated Media Accelerator 900 graphics card
  • 60GB Hard Drive (5400RPM)
  • 4-cell Lithium Ion Battery

Microsoft have their Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which will test your system for any incompatibilities.

Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if your PC is ready for Windows 7. It scans your hardware, devices, and installed programs for known compatibility issues, gives you guidance on how to resolve potential issues found, and recommends what to do before you upgrade.

I suggest that everything downloads it to see just how suited Windows 7 is for their computer.

  • Intel integrated Media Accelerator 900 graphics card - (DX9 Compatible) - Yes

All looks good to me.

Excellent, so it should run smoothly? And what do you mean by "No factor AFAIK". I know the battery power shouldn't matter, I was just throwing it out there. – wahle509 Oct 20 '09 at 18:30
Never mind, just looked it up: As Far As I Know. Thanks for the help. – wahle509 Oct 20 '09 at 18:31

If you're on 32-bit, it should run smooth. On 64-bit the same applications will use more memory than their 32-bit counterparts hence the higher requirement. If you're going 64-bit, it wouldn't hurt to throw in a bit more RAM, but it should run fine anyways. – John T Oct 20 '09 at 18:33
The only thing which won't work is Aero. The IGMA 900 does not support Aero - the oldest version which does is the IGMA 945. If you want the nice graphical effects, you're out of luck, but other than that everything should work fine. – nhinkle Mar 11 '10 at 5:43

I've installed Windows7 on a netbook with much lower specs and it ran comparably to WindowsXP.

Windows 7 is the fastest running and most RAM efficient OS they've released since 3.2. There's no reason it shouldn't kick ass on anything released since 02.

I installed it on my 2004 vintage desktop PC. AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 1GB RAM (yes, seriously). Worked like a charm for browsing and listening to music.
