I have a Toshiba Satellite C850 - 1C1. It came pre-installed with Windows 8 64-bit and just like any other Windows 8 OEM product it does not have a product key I can use; or rather, the product key is embedded in the bios.

My installation of Windows 8 is corrupt and so is it's recovery partition. Because of that reset and refresh is of course also not available. The physical hard disk itself is alright as I've already tried installing Windows 7 in it and it worked fine.

What I did was clone the disk contents onto a spare disk and did a clean install of Windows 7. I did that because I could not find a solution and needed a personal computer I can use for work. Just in case I find a solution I can just clone it back.

I cannot find any free downloads for a recovery media nor can I recover the corrupt files. Unfortunately I also did not create a recovery disc when I first used it. It also didn't come with a recovery disc upon purchase.

So now the bottom line is I cannot think of another way but to repair the installation using a Windows 8 media or do a clean install of windows 8 from a bootable image burnt onto a disc or copied onto a usb device.

Take note that this is not a duplicate of the following questions simply because a product key is not available to me.

To get Toshiba recovery media you should contact Toshiba, though you may have to pay: backupmedia.toshiba.eu/serial.aspx (for europe, taken from toshiba.co.uk/innovation/generic/windows8-upgrade-stepbystep) –  Mokubai Apr 8 '13 at 17:12

You will have to contact your vendor, Toshiba, for instructions on options available to you. It is very unlikely there is any other source you can legitimately obtain a copy that is valid for your device. Most OEM vendors will also provide you with a copy of your key either attached to the device itself or with the documentation in the original packaging.

On my Dell I had a similar issue, preloaded windows w/ no media. In fact, they no longer provide the OS media these days. After contacting Dell Support, they provided me with some information on obtaining the OS disk.

I located the sticker on the case containing the Key # for my Windows version. On the Microsoft website, there is a place to download the OS disk if you provide this key # that is on the sticker. Yes, it is a *.iso, but these days it is quite easy to make a DVD from that.

If you contact Toshiba, I'm sure they have the specific URI that you need to use.

You're saying there's something other than a product key I can use? –  Subaru Tashiro Apr 9 '13 at 7:23

Look for the ID on the Windows 8 sticker on your system. –  mdpc Apr 9 '13 at 18:20
