Hi,

With the new October 2009 MacBook, it seems to be the better machine compared to the 13 inch Macbook Pro (ignoring the looks) ? Am I missing something ?

Both have 2.26 GHz, 2 GB DDR3, Nvidia GeForce 9400M. Macbook has 250 GB hard drive compared to Macbook Pro's 160 GB. And Macbook is cheaper.

MBP has more options. Matte screen instead of glossy. RAM up to 8GB instead of 4. SD slot. Firewire. Separate audio in/out.

If you do not need/use some of these features and just going to go with base configurations the Macbook may be for you.

The matte screen in itself would be a reason for me to get a MBP. – Peter M Oct 20 at 20:25

MBP does NOT have seperate audio in/out either.

i definitely prefer a mbp over an mb because of the looks...lets get this straight, the mb will look ugly after a few months (trust me...i say my teachers mb)...however a mbp will still look beautiful after a few months (unless you dont drop it); however, the mbp will heat faster than the mb (that is what i heard)...so i would consider a mbp and an investment for a mbp laptop cooler.

MBP also has a light up keyboard and its lighter

Do you mean "its lighter" as in the MBP has a [cigarette] lighter, or "it's lighter" as in the MBP weighs less? – Andrew Grimm Dec 13 at 6:21

One really nice feature about the newer MacBooks is the underside panel acts like a giant heatsink. It rarely gets hot at all (compared with the previous generation, which is almost good for cooking eggs). I think once this proves its usefulness, it will make its way to the next MBP update, so you might want to wait a bit for that. The next refresh will likely address the minor hardware advantages the MB currently has as well.

The main reasons I would go with the MacBook Pro are:

  • Built in SD card reader
  • FireWire 800 port
  • Light-up keyboard
  • Weighs less (by 0.2 pounds)
  • Runs cooler (since the whole computer acts as a heat sink)
