I'm looking for free fonts that are similar to Comic Sans, but that aren't actually Comic Sans.

Why not Comic Sans itself? Well, its been overused, its too easy to recognise, I want something a bit more distinctive. And also: because of this.

edit: Its for a children's story, if that helps.

So, free fonts along the lines of Comic Sans ... who can help?

Thanks.

Just because someone might be interested, a huge number of published comic books are lettered on a computer using fonts developed by Comicraft: comicbookfonts.com They're far from free, though. – wfaulk Oct 20 '09 at 22:38

Blambot.com has a number of high-quality free and pay comic lettering fonts. Web Letterer is my favorite of the free ones, though it's uppercase-only.

Helvetica. I know, it's not very much like Comic Sans. Which is the point :-)

I don't care if dark grey helvetica on a light grey background is cliché, it still looks fantastic. – Phoshi Oct 20 '09 at 21:41
Just don't use Helvetica in all caps, it looks awful. – Jason S Dec 8 '09 at 15:38

I found some answers to my own question ...

It turns out the 'bancomicsans' site I linked to actually has its own free fonts archive, with lots of Comic-Sans alternatives.

Also, this page on FontSpace has some Comic-Sans-a-likes

Andika is a font designed for beginning readers. One of it's design features is to break symmetry: b is not an exact mirror image of d, etc.
