I am running Debian squeeze and I want to install monit, the problem is that the version in the repository is old and doesn't have some options that I need.

I downloaded the source and compiled it using these commands :

 $ tar zxvf monit-x.y.z.tar.gz (were x.y.z denotes version numbers)
 $ cd monit-x.y.z
 $ ./configure (use ./configure --help to view available options)
 $ make && make install

It succesefully compiled but when I type

sudo service monit start

I get:

monit: unrecognized service

How can I manually install it as a service? Thanks

First, you need to actually run make install using sudo in order to install it, so:

sudo make install

Then, you need a script in /etc/init.d that starts the service. Monit comes with a generic one in the source directory called contrib/rc.monit. Below is the one that comes with the debian wheezy monit package (some paths might be different from a source compiled version and the debian one has a few extra "features" which you could incorporate).

Copy this to a file called /etc/init.d/monit and make the file executable.

You should also create the file /etc/default/monit with the following in it:

You should then be able to start it with the command you ran:

sudo service monit start

To have it start automatically on boot, run the following to have debian insert it into the proper place in the boot up services.

insserv monit

Just a comment about Ubuntu 12.04.4 and Monit:

I went nuts trying to figure out why monit would not work as advertised on Ubuntu 12.04.4. Turns out that the package apt-get gives you is out of date. I decided to compile from source.

So, if you’ve already got Monit installed as I did, you can simply download the source tarball and ./configure --prefix=/usr followed by make && make install.

The startup script already in /etc/init.d seems to work fine. So you can then just sudo service monit restart and you’re on your way.
