What alternatives are there to iTunes? I have an iPod, so it must sync with it. I like the UI, but sometimes it is painfully slow.

Are you talking Windows or OS X? – Alex Rozanski Jul 16 '09 at 18:33
The tags say Windows... – ajm Jul 16 '09 at 18:37

MediaMonkey is a fairly powerful music manager that supports syncing to iPods.

I love MediaMonkey. Unfortunately I had to abandon it when I got my iPod Touch since it doesn't fully support it, but I still recommend it to all my friends. – Dillie-O Jul 16 '09 at 18:42
I paid for the full version of MediaMonkey. I was thrilled when it worked with the 3rd gen Nano I inherited from my son. I'm not a fan of iTunes at all. – gadzooks64 Aug 26 '09 at 0:37
Last time I checked you still had to have iTunes installed for MediaMonkey to be able to sync. – ChrisF Sep 6 '09 at 18:05

There's a great list here of iPod utilities - the app they recommend for syncing music etc. is called Floola.

Floola is usually what I use, but it doesn't work under 64bit linux :( – user2254 Jul 16 '09 at 18:48
Thanks Andy, nice list! – Artur Carvalho Jul 16 '09 at 18:49
Let me know if it works for you! – ajm Jul 16 '09 at 18:55
+1 for Floola – Molly7244 Sep 14 '09 at 20:44

Songbird is meant to be quite good, and has a similar interface to iTunes.

I always keep an eye of the road map - once it can rip CDs (soon) it will be a serious contender! – alex Jul 28 '09 at 2:44
Songbird has stopped supporting iPods – celenius Jul 28 '10 at 14:11

I use foobar2000 with the iPod Manager plugin.

It not only supports synching to a library, but also upload/removal of individial songs or albums.

Sharepod is much faster than iTunes, which is why I use it. In fact, I can't remember the last time I used iTunes.

You don't need to install Sharepod (you only need .NET Framework 2 to be installed). I don't think it rips CDs but that's fine by me, I use EAC or CDEx to rip exactly as I like.

Have you tried Winamp?

I use Winamp with ml_ipod plugin. It's great if you have an older iPod. I use it with my Shuffle 2G. It does not work with the latest iPhone/iTouches.

YamiPod

  • Free.
  • Very simple.
  • Cross Platform.
  • Lightweight.
  • Doesn't install on your OS (only a single executable).
  • And most important: it works really good.
