To cut a long story short, i followed the steps here : so that i can install win 7 64 bit off my external HDD.

When i select to boot from the external drive however, i just get a blinking cursor for a second or two and then windows starts up as normal.

Anyone have any ideas what to do?

The DVD/USB tool does not detect my external drives so i am using the command prompt method instea.

ISO is the official win 7 ultimate 64 bit downloaded from the microsoft site.

I've got a theroy that something messed up with the drive (since i was able to boot from it before), but i'm not sure what. Anyone have a copy of bootrec.exe that they can upload so that i can troubleshoot the drive?

Don't you have a USB stick you can use? – Karan Jun 1 '13 at 7:28
Karan : not at the moment. i'm working with what i've got. – Question Jun 1 '13 at 7:36
"I've got a theroy (sic) that something messed up with the drive" - If you ran diskpart > clean it should have cleared all partitions off the disk before proceeding. Also see Where can I download “bootrec.exe”? – Karan Jun 1 '13 at 7:43
Yes i did run the clean portion. That did not help. I did find the site… but the download link is invalid. Also i think it's for bdboot.exe and not bootrec.exe... – Question Jun 1 '13 at 7:43
