A couple of years ago, there was the question who would be the successor of the DVD, the Blu-Ray disk or the HD-DVD. Now in 2009 I have to admit that I don't know why Blu-Ray won. Can anyone help me?

Are you sure it won? Here in Poland we still have a HD-DVD market. – kinokijuf Jan 15 at 17:58

This is a pretty good summary of what had happened. I also like this one, which is a little bit more detailed. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938%5F105-9874199-1.html

From Wikipedia:

HD DVD had a head start in the high definition video market, as Blu-ray Disc sales were slow to gain market share. The first Blu-ray Disc player was perceived as expensive and "buggy", and there were few titles available. This changed when the PlayStation 3 was launched, since every PS3 unit also functioned as a Blu-ray Disc player [...] during the first three quarters of 2007, BD outsold HD DVDs by about two to one. In a June 28, 2007 press release, Twentieth Century Fox cited Blu-ray Disc's adoption of the BD+ anticopying system as a key factor in their decision to support the Blu-ray Disc format. In February 2008, Toshiba withdrew its support for the HD DVD format, leaving Blu-ray as the victor.

Making the PS3's optical media was a stroke of genius on Sony's part. – ChrisF Oct 25 '09 at 17:42
