I have experienced the following problem on many different PCs and many different operating systems. It seems to only arise when using an external optical mouse (arbitrary manufacturer).

I experience that seemingly random the mouse pointer will just walk off to the upper left corner very fast and stick there for half a second while you struggle to find out why you can't find your pointer on the screen any more.

Have you tried using another mouse? (Or is it the case with any mouse you're using on any OS?) –  slhck Jun 3 '13 at 8:24

@slhck Any mouse will act like this after some time. It's not even a matter of new versus used. –  arney Jun 3 '13 at 8:27
