I'm currently running Defraggler on my system, as it's fast, seems to be effective, and has a nice clean interface; it's also the program the other techs recommend to me. I've also heard good things about JKDefrag.

Which program do you find you get the best results with?

Get a file system that doesn't have such serious fragmentation problems ;-) Ooops, you on windows? sorry ;-))) – Dana the Sane Jul 16 '09 at 19:52
My main OS is on Ext3, which doesn't, but there are some programs that need to be run from Windows. – Dentrasi Jul 17 '09 at 6:38

If you're willing to pay, I'd use Diskeeper. Otherwise, Defraggler - from the same people as CCleaner.

If you don't need a UI, jkDefrag is also a good choice.

The last version of Diskeeper I used had a service running in the background - what a waste of resources. Now I just use JkDefrag every week or two. – Umber Ferrule Aug 6 '09 at 22:57
The Diskeeper service only runs when your computer is idle, and it keeps your system defragmented so you don't have to run a huge defrag every couple of months. It's definitely not a waste of resources. – DisgruntledGoat Sep 29 '09 at 0:23

PerfectDisk has the most efficient optimizations out of any defrag solution I've used. If you want every last inch squeezed out of your file system, it doesn't get much better, IMO. Home Edition is only $29.99, so it's not expensive, either.

If you're looking for something free (or "lightweight"), I've found Vista's built-in defragmentation software to be sufficient, especially since it runs in the background, meaning you don't have to do anything. Alternatively, there's Defraggler.

Here's another vote for PerfectDisk from a long time user. The software is very full featured, not terribly expensive and the company seems quite customer oriented. – OldElfin Feb 18 '10 at 4:53

I use JkDefrag for my defragmentation needs. It's quick and reliable.

Amen, I love it as a screensaver as well, but my laptop has a SSD so I didn't need it anymore :( – Ivo Flipse Jul 16 '09 at 19:15

I use Smart Defrag which works well. There is an Auto Defrag option which will run if the computer is idle as well as scheduled scans.

It only covers the registry portion, but I've always used Registry First Aid

The built-in defrag on Vista and 7. It runs all by itself in the background and I've never found a need for a separate program since Vista.

Check out JkDefrag for a large number of options and very good defrag.
Its also free, open-source and can be unzipped for immediate use.

The main page has all the options described.
You can choose the last version 3.36 or the freshly released scriptable 4.0, now called MyDefrag.

I use a command line utility called Contig. It's part of the Sysinternals Suite.
