I have a Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS machine. I am accessing it using putty and not able to create any file or folder even from root user. I have also tried to create file, or upload file using WinSCP and Filezilla but it returns Read-only file system error.

Why i am not able to create any directory even from root user? How can i fix it?

The filesystem may have been mounted as read-only. The first place to look is in /var/log/syslog, to see if there is any mention of a failed mount and then a remount as read-only. –  jozzas Aug 28 '13 at 21:21
