I have a Google Nexus 4 and a Lubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) workstation. I have Virtualbox installed, and I'm running Windows 7 x64 on it. Guest additions are installed and working fine - I have no problems sharing files, mouse, keyboard, most USB devices, etc on the guest OS. I've enabled USB debugging on my Nexus, and can see it when I run
adb devices in a terminal and I haven't "connected" it to the VM.
I downloaded the Nexus 4 Toolkit from xda-developers to the guest OS, selected the proper image version, and then followed the instructions to install the universal ADB driver to the letter: uninstall any existing driver, disconnect phone, install universal driver, reconnect phone. The device manager picks up the device first as "Nexus 4", then when it attempts to install the driver, it turns into "Google Nexus ADB Interface" and I get the titular error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I've attempted uninstall-reinstalling multiple times, switching USB ports (I don't think the VM sees exactly what port it's plugged into...), changing the device mode from MTP to PTP and back, making sure Windows Media Player is updated to the latest version... no dice. I can't seem to find anything on setting up ADB to work with this combination of host/guest OS. Any ideas...?
