I've got VMware Player on a laptop setting up a development snapshot of a website (because I'm not comfortable updating the live website!) and while there's no direct issue there, something else is troubling me.

I found that FTP bandwidth seemed to be throttled. Using a 4G LTE connection, I was able to download the snapshot outside of the VMware instance at a healthy 3MB/sec average. Inside the VM, speed dropped to ~256kb/sec. I am now SCPing the files into the VM and that's running at 3MB/sec just fine?

Any clue as to what's going on here? It seems that there's something limiting FTP bandwidth here.

The host is Windows 7 Pro x64, the guest is Debian Linux 7.0 running kernel 3.2.0-4.

Thanks
