This is specifically for people that own their own small software consulting business. I'm doing a little more development work for clients now, and I'm wondering which business software you're using to keep track of your clients and what they owe you or are going to owe and how much they've paid and all that kind of information?

I couldn't ask this on StackOverflow because it isn't about coding, so hopefully you guys can give me some good answers.

I highly recommend FreshBooks! I have used them for multiple projects with the same situation. It's a great way to keep track of your time, what they owe you, send invoices (and reminders) and record payments.

that's what i pay my Consigliere for! :)

seriously, chasing money is the worst part of the job (next to accountancy, but they go pretty much hand in hand), a real show stopper in my books.

i demand COD wherever applicable, avoid contract work like the plague and for keeping track of balances i'm using Sage 50, which suits my accounting needs and management of customers and suppliers, at an acceptable rate.
