What are the best X Servers for Windows? There are a lot out there and I'm sure they all have their different strong points. Are any of the commercial products' strong points strong enough to make paying for one a reasonable choice over using one of the various free ones, like Xming, Cygwin/X, and WeirdX?

All I really want is a plain X server. I, like most of you, I'm sure, don't need all the crud that frequently comes with them, like autologins to remote systems, xdmcp sessions, etc. They are usually awful and using PuTTY works better in most, if not all, cases.

So what products do you use and what do you see as their shortcomings and strengths?

I've always been happy with Xming + putty/SecureCRT. It's really easy to get going and I've been happy with the performance. I've used the portable version along with putty to solve numerous problems away from home/work.

I was having some trouble with Xming under Windows 7. Anyone have any experience with that? – wfaulk Oct 27 '09 at 20:38
I don't have any experience using it with 7, sorry. – djhowell Oct 27 '09 at 21:31

I've used CygwinX for years, and have been quite happy with it. It sits in the system tray and I never notice it, until I run an X application through PuTTY. Then the window pops up, I use the app, and go about my business. It's free, and hasn't had any problems.

It used to be a gigantic pain to install. Is it still? – wfaulk Oct 28 '09 at 20:11
I don't find it to be difficult to install. You select a mirror, and then select which packages you want to install. For the X server, you want the 'xinit' package in the X11 category. It will take care of the rest. – Jeff Shattock Oct 28 '09 at 21:54

I'm running the Mocha X server. It was painless to install and never failed me.
