It looks like the only big difference is the "dock" instead of the traditional task bar.

Is there any other substantial change in W7 over Vista? Why is then the perception it is far superior than the previous one.

It seems it is faster and consume less memory, did Microsoft rewrote some core modules or something like that?

Links and screenshots are appreciated.

I think they had compiled many of the libraries with .Net, but the realized that was a bad idea. – Brad Gilbert Jul 16 '09 at 20:38

Here are some of the biggest changes, off the top of my head:

  • The new taskbar (as you mentioned)
  • Much better touchscreen support (so you'll see more of those in the future)
  • Much better multicore support (for those quad-core processors)
  • Faster and lower memory footprint; also boots much faster
  • General cleanup in many areas of the UI (like the Control Panel and Gadgets)
  • New "Libraries" allow you to better organize your documents

One of my personal favorites in Windows 7 is the ability to drag your windows to the left or right hand to 'dock' them to the side of the screen. Or drag them to the top to maximize them. This is just incredible useful in day-to-day activities. Comparing 2 windows side-by-side has never been easier!

One of the biggest and most appreciated changes I've seen (I'm running the RC) is how Windows 7 will download and install all of your device drivers for you, without assistance. The only kinds of things I had to do were, for example, my Logitech mouse...things that worked but you might want to customize w/additional software.

I think this was the most common complain in Vista isn't? – OscarRyz Jul 16 '09 at 20:41

Jump Lists are great.

While Windows Vista's development concentrated on the core of the OS, improving on security, decoupling internal parts, etc. Windows 7 is another overhaul of everything, although mainly concentrating on the UI. A basic mantra was "Nothing is left untouched" and whereever issues arose that was a reason to change something.

However, little changed under the hood, it's still almost the same as Vista (with few new features).
