Connected a never used (new) HP Monitor to my Dell LapTop 4 days ago. All worked great for 2.5 days. Next time I turned on the laptop the external screen displays a "modern art" visual. I've systematically checked all connections, worked through the support guild - made certain the external monitor is identified as primary monitor - any suggestions? Can I use a different manufacture's product as an external monitor?

If the monitor is new, have you considered getting a replacement? Of course you can also just try any other monitor (as long as it has the same connection) and see if that shows the same error to rule out that the laptop itself is the issue. – slhck Jul 17 '13 at 20:23
Just because your laptop display works does not mean it is the monitor at fault, there are components discreet to both outputs. Try your laptop with a different monitor before taking things further. – Tog Jul 17 '13 at 20:47
