I've messed with xmodmap to get more shortcuts for Emacs. I have stuff like this in my ~/.Xmodmap:

keycode 41 = f F U03C6 U03A6

The unicode ones are φ and Φ. In graphical Emacs, I can bind:

  • φ
  • C-φ
  • M-φ
  • C-M-φ

However, while inside bash only these work:

  • φ
  • M-φ

The other two are translated as C-a and C-M-a. Why are they translated like this and is it possible to bind C-φ?

And to extend the quesion a bit more, which modifiers and which combinations of them are possible in bash?
