I am new to ubuntu server. How can I create a group lets call that group 'mypeople' then add a user to 'mypeople' lets use user 'brad'.

and have 'brad' only access to /var/www/brad/. 'brad' can write, read, execute in his directory and have shell access.

Man, was this ever surprisingly easy. –  Ryan Shillington Mar 29 '14 at 14:47

I think everything you need is in the official doc: Ubuntu User Management

Edit: your question regarding user specific access was also answered here: Can I create an SSH user which can access only certain directory?
