This question is not programming related. This question would be better answered on superuser.com, it does not ask any specific programming question. – tinkertim Oct 30 at 7:13
Do you want to write programs for UNIX, or learn how to configure and maintain UNIX systems? – Artelius Oct 30 at 7:14

I'm fond of Kernighan and Pike: "Programming in the UNIX environment". Despite being 30 years old it's concise and explains the design philosophy of pipes well.
