My keyboard suddenly started having trouble with the shift key. The caps lock works, but trying to capitalise letters with the shift key only works for some keys (Specifically, Not working means nothing is produced). The strange thing is that when keys work depends on if I am holding down the left or right shift.

No idea if this is a software or hardware problem.

I have tried different USB ports, restarting, and uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard driver. All to no effect.

I'd try plugging the keyboard into a different machine and see if the issue still occurs - should help isolate it to either the software or the hardware – ernie Aug 12 '13 at 17:55
it appears to be a keyboard hardware issue. i guess i will buy a new one (will try washing it). – Jonathon Wisnoski Aug 12 '13 at 18:19
If you're really motivated to save the keyboard, open it up, and then clean each of the circuit sheets with a damp rag (water only). – ernie Aug 12 '13 at 22:10
