The CF card in my DSLR got corrupted.

I'm trying to get this card back to life, or at least, do a backup and operate on it.

I already tried several recovery tools but most of them won't work since the physical drive can't be found. All I know is that my card reader turns on its light when I plug it in, and a drive letter is associated to it; I don't know if the card is still readable or not, if it's powered or not.

My idea is trying to access the device first. If I can manage to read and store the data in a binary file, I may be able to dump it and then run recovery scripts...

I've a standard $10 card reader, a windows and a mac computer, and my developer skills available for any tests...
