I have a macbook and a Creative Sound Blaster Live 24-bit External sound card connected over USB. To this soundcard, I've connected a set of Creative Inspire T6160 speakers (5.1 surround) that I've successfully used previously on a PC.

Now, I have configured Audio Midi Setup.app to use these speakers in 5.1 mode, and have played test tones through each of the individual speakers to ensure that they are indeed working.

However, when I play something through VLC or a web browser or spotify, I hear sound only through the front two channels and the subwoofer - it seems that my speakers are working in 2.1 mode.
I further tested by playing an MKV file (which has 5.1 surround sound) with VLC, to confirm that all 6 channels are played when available in the media file.

How/Could I go about enabling full 5.1 sound from VLC, spotify etc by default where only stereo audio is available, even if it means only playing redundant stereo channels?

Technical Specs:

  • Mac OSX 10.7.5 (Lion)
  • Creative Sound Blaster Live 24-bit External

PS: I've looked at this question and it doesn't help
